Easa Alzarooni
Executive Director, System Operations
EWEC
Easa astutely leads all matters regarding network operations, and the scheduling and despatch of water and electricity from EWEC’s generation fleet and the Abu Dhabi transmission network, including the interconnection to Emirates National Grid (ENG) and Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) Grid. An insightful expert, Easa brings over two decades’ experience managing and planning electrical networks and related network projects including renewable energies like Photovoltaic Plants, Nuclear Plants and Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants.
Started his career as a planning engineer in Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA), and was the program manager of the 1st Load Dispatch Center (LDC) in Sharjah that involved building a complete telecommunication network based on fibre optic in the city of Sharjah (more than 200km), adaptation works in more that 70 substations and a construction of a complete LDC building with all related SCADA systems. Later, he oversaw managing the SEWA Load Dispatch Center (LDC) as a director. In 2012 been prompted to a managing director of Planning and Projects and renewable energy, handling SEWA’s overall planning and managing its strategic projects and renewable energy initiatives.
In mid- 2013, Easa to Abu Dhabi Energy Sector by joining Abu Dhabi Transmission and Control Company (TRANSCO) and oversaw power transmission projects delivery (a portfolio of 11 billion AED of under development power transmission assets). Later, late 2015 he went back to network operations by joining the TRANSCO Network Management team, managing all water and power despatch operations in the emirates of Abu Dhabi and beyond. A disruption program kicked start at the same period, where the network operations team were deploying very courageous enhancements in their ongoing processes, operating models and introducing world best practices in generation fleet despatch, that contributed to reducing the annual despatch cost deviation from an average of 12% to around 4%, saving millions of dirhams on annual basis and saving the country natural resources. Easa and his team experienced the clean energy era with all its related operational challenges when the 1st Photovoltaic farm at Noor Abu Dhabi (900 MW) in 2019 and later the commissioning of the 1st Nuclear reactor at Barakah Nuclear Plant (1345 MW) in mid-2020.
In 2022 Easa and the Network Operations team joined the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) because of carving-out the system operator function from TRANSCO to EWEC and joining the forces to lead the decarbonization journey in the energy sector at Abu Dhabi and UAE. Currently, Easa represents the system operation directorate as an executive director at EWEC Leadership team.
Easa holds a BSc. in Electrical Engineering from the UAE University, in addition to being certified by the University of Tokyo in Executive Management, and the Harvard Business School in Advanced Management Program (AMP).
