Dr. El Khatib is one of the regions experts on power system economics, electricity markets and power aggregation. He currently serves as an expert advisor at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure; where he leads the comprehensive development of UAE first Electricity Market
Dr. Sameh El Khatib also co-founded SmartWatt, an Emirati-based global energy services company. SmartWatt mission is pioneering sustainability through digitalization and power intelligence. SmartWatt as an aggregator, mines power flexibility and monetizes it through its services to end-users, grid operators and power utilities.
Dr. Sameh El Khatib received his PhD in Electrical Engineering, as well as his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from McGill University. His work focused on power system analysis and economics, electricity market restructuring and planning and grid security.
He was a faculty member at Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi and was a visiting professor at MIT in Cambridge
Before joining Masdar, Dr. El Khatib was a strategy consultant with Booz and Co. working on strategic projects in the Energy Sector. Dr. El Khatib has also collaborated with various organizations such as GE, Etihad Airlines, ICAD and the University of Tokyo. El Khatib was a director of energy & power division, as well as senior advisor for the CEO of ICAD, one of the largest KSA based system technology & integration companies in the region
The evolution of the operation of power systems from the perspectives of regulation and economics has been Dr. El khatib mainstay and passion throughout his professional career. Throughout his career, he was mandated as an academic, as an entrepreneur or as an advisor to decision makers, with provisioning the evolution of the power grid and mainly concerned with mapping the requirement of the grid with the flexibility and intelligence potential of the demand side through technological capabilities and digital transformation.
Dr. El khatib has led numerous projects ranging from demand-side energy management and power aggregation to market-based regulation and restructuring of electricity markets to optimize power portfolio of power utilities, promote social-welfare and grid resilience in the power sector.
