As the First Chairman of Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, His Excellency Awaidha
Murshed Ali Al Marar provides leadership, guidance and strategic direction to the
government body that has been given the mandate to drive the UAE capital’s energy
sector towards a sustainable future.
Appointed to head the Department of Energy at its inception in September 2017, H.E
has been tasked with ensuring that the department becomes a world-leading role
model of energy security provision and a benchmark of excellent practice for other
global energy sector regulators to emulate. Included within his extensive remit are
strategic planning for the department’s array of activities, overseeing e‑ective
implementation of its policies and creating awareness in the local community of the
department’s instrumental role in shaping Abu Dhabi’s future.
A signicant aspect of Al Marar’s role sees him integrating key energy sector
stakeholders in Abu Dhabi, including producers and providers, to formulate a collegiate
and unied approach to meeting the capital’s future energy requirements. By
overseeing a shared responsibility strategy from all industry players towards energy
sustainability, His Excellency denes and renes a viable energy roadmap for the capital
that is aimed at leading it to a greener tomorrow.
Al Marar brings a wealth of leadership experience and expertise to his role. Prior to his
appointment at the Department of Energy, he was Chairman of the Department of
Municipalities and Transport, Abu Dhabi, with previous positions also including Vice
President at Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) and Head of the Joint
Services Department at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
Outside of his Chairmanship at the Department of Energy, His Excellency is a member of
the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. He serves as a Board Member for ADNOC, Emirates
Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), Nawah Energy Company and Barakah One. He is on
the Executive Committees of ENEC and Nawah and the Supreme Committee of the
Water and Electricity Sector. Further, he is the Chairman of the Executive Management
A‑airs and Human Capital Committee, and a member of the Infrastructure Committee.
Al Marar holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Arizona,
USA and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the UAE University’s College of
Business and Economics.
