Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)
Steve Chengelis is the Sr. Director of Future Nuclear at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), focusing on research that supports the near-term deployment of advanced reactors and the utilization of nuclear energy to meet a clean energy future.
Prior to his current role, Chengelis was the Director of the Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) and Welding and Repair Technology Center (WRTC). The Department identifies and develops technologies that can reliably and cost-effectively examine and characterize material changes in nuclear components, as well as develops and tests advanced materials, joining, and repair technologies for nuclear plant applications.
Previously, Chengelis led the Strategy and Execution department for the nuclear sector at EPRI. His responsibilities included management of sector strategic planning activities, quality and project management, finances, and overall sector operations. Also, he was the Executive Director of the Member & Technical Services nuclear sector. In that role, he was responsible for technology transfer and growing the global collaborative for EPRI’s nuclear-specific research activities, as well as shaping and executing the nuclear global market strategy.
Chengelis joined EPRI in 2013 as a Technical Advisor for the nuclear sector. Prior to joining EPRI, Chengelis worked for Babcock and Wilcox Nuclear Energy (BWXT). Chengelis originally joined B&W as a field service engineer and subsequently held positions of increasing technical, commercial, and strategic responsibility.
Chengelis received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering with a minor in business and mathematics from Ohio University, and a master’s degree in business administration, with a specialty in finance, from Drexel University. He is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Lean Six Sigma certified green belt
